GivingTuesday 2026: A Movement Rooted in Everyday Generosity

Each year, on the Tuesday after Black Friday and Cyber Monday, people around the world pause to support a powerful idea: generosity can transform communities. Known globally as GivingTuesday, this year’s celebration takes place on December 2, but the movement extends far beyond a single day.

A Global Effort Inspired by Community

Launched in 2012, GivingTuesday set out to balance a weekend of consumerism with a dedicated moment for giving. It quickly grew in scale and impact. By 2019, it had become an independent organization with international reach, supported by a diverse network of over 110 country leaders and thousands of community organizers.

More Than Fundraising

While donations are an important part of GivingTuesday, the movement embraces generosity in all its forms. In recent years, millions of people worldwide have participated by volunteering, donating goods, advocating for social causes, and offering acts of kindness within their communities.

In 2024 alone, 12.9 million people donated goods and 9.2 million volunteered in the United States, demonstrating how generosity extends far beyond financial contributions.

The Impact Goes Beyond One Day

A common misconception is that GivingTuesday is a one-day event. In practice, it serves as the start of deeper engagement. Many organizations use the momentum to launch new initiatives, strengthen community relationships, or build recurring donor programs.

The movement works because it is simple, participatory, and accessible. Anyone can take part without registrations or fees. Nonprofits, companies, and individuals are encouraged to shape the day in ways that reflect their mission and values.

A Moment to Reconnect With Purpose

Asha Curran, CEO of GivingTuesday, summarizes the heart of the movement:
“When millions unite with a shared purpose, we don’t just give what we can—we create real, tangible change. Each donation, each act of generosity, is a building block for community solutions that actually make a difference.”

For organizations working in development, humanitarian response, or community strengthening, GivingTuesday is an opportunity to highlight impact, mobilize supporters, and inspire collective action. It is also a reminder that generosity is most powerful when it continues throughout the year.

Celebrate and Carry the Momentum Forward

As we mark GivingTuesday 2026, we honor every volunteer, donor, advocate, and partner who helps build more resilient and generous communities. Whether through sharing skills, contributing resources, or lending a voice to important causes, each action strengthens the global movement.

This year, we invite our community to reflect on the role of generosity in their work. How does it guide your mission? How does it shape your relationships with the people and communities you serve?

GivingTuesday is a moment, but generosity is a practice. Together, we can make it part of everyday life.
